Why does plaquenil take so long to work

It regulates the activity of the immune system, which may be overactive in some conditions. Hydroxychloroquine can modify the underlying disease process, rather than simply treating the symptoms.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Hi. I have been taking Plaquenil since July 9, 2006 6 weeks and I do not notice results so far. For those of you who have taken it, how long does it take to work and how will I know it's starting to work? I really appreciate your response. I have arthritis in my feet and ankles. My question is for those that have taken Plaquenil/Hydroxychloroquine. How long did it take for it to remove symptoms in your personal experience? I know I've read it can take up to 6 months but what I'm wondering is, do you just wake up one day and find it's kicked in 6 months down the road or more likely, it starts to work slowly over 6 months?

Hydroxychloroquine is often taken in combination with other drugs such as methotrexate. Over the long term hydroxychloroquine can reduce pain, swelling and joint stiffness. It may be as long as 12 weeks before you notice the benefits.

Mar 24, 2011 Had headaches with the plaquenil so went to the sulfar and predisone. Sulfar was a waste of time and since I had a little help from the plaquenil he switched me back to that with pain meds for the headaches and body. Recently i went back for app. and plaquenil had stopped doing anything so he added the methotrexate to it. I did not want to take it.
