    Plaquenil and double vision

If there is double vision when looking with the right or left eye alone, then the cause is ophthalmological—such as a cataract, a problem of the retina, or another eye disease. On the other hand, when double vision is present with both eyes open, but goes away upon looking with only one eye, the cause may be neurological. Cranial nerve palsies can result in double vision, poor eye movement and alignment, poor pupil reflexes, and droopy eyelids. Lupus optic neuropathy occurs in one-two percent of people with lupus. Slow progressive vision loss also can result in more rapid loss of vision from lupus optic neuropathy. It is a derivative chloroquine, also an antimalarial agent which has a much higher risk of toxicity. Plaquenil can rarely cause a retinal problem involving the central visual area, or macula. Retinal toxicity from Plaquenil is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Call your doctor right away if you have any eyesight changes like blurred or foggy eyesight, trouble focusing or reading, or trouble seeing in dim light. Plaquenil, widely used to treat lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory and dermatologic conditions, is very effective, and “the risk of toxicity in the first five years for someone without special risk factors is very low,” Dr. Marmor said. However, risk increases with duration of use. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, which are used to decrease inflammation, pain and joint damage. While today it is used to treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, it was originally used as an anti-malaria drug.

Question about RA and taste and smell issues. I am now wondering if my issues with taste are from the RA in a round about way. I have also started getting tonsil stones in the last year since my RA symptoms started. I wonder if the RA could be causing swelling of the tonsils which in turn causes the tonsil stones and results in a distorted sense of taste. Hmmm something to ask the doc about.
