    Plaquenil adverse reactions

It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. One of the reasons that physicians feel comfortable in prescribing Plaquenil is its low risk to benefit ratio. This means that the side effects of Plaquenil are mild and infrequent compared with its potential benefits. As with any medication, allergic reactions including skin rashes and non-allergic reactions can occur. While side effects of corticosteroids are usually to blame, there is also the possibility of ocular damage associated with long-term use of the antimalarial drugs hydroxychloroquine brand name Plaquenil® and chloroquine. Improved vision screening tests and updated dosing guidelines are key to avoiding such complications. Side effects include irritability, headache, weakness, hair lightening or loss, stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, muscle pain, rash and itching. Rarely, hydroxychloroquine can affect the bone marrow leading to reduced white blood cells leukopenia or platelets thrombocytopenia and abnormal red blood cells.

For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

Drusen in my retina - Sep 04, 2007 Well I had my regular ophthalmology appointment today and the doc said he sees drusen in my eye. He said that its a pre-sign to macular degeneration which can lead to partial blindness. Because of my age I'll be 32 this month it is very rare. Thing is he didn't see it back in January when I went for my baseline appt before starting Plaq.
