    It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

Hydroxychloroquine is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It regulates the activity of the immune system, which may be overactive in some conditions. Hydroxychloroquine can modify the underlying disease process, rather than simply treating the symptoms. Before using Plaquenil, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have psoriasis, porphyria, liver disease, alcoholism, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase G-6-PD deficiency. Take Plaquenil for the full prescribed length of time for malaria. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.

    For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

  7. My ALTs and ASTs have been normal ever since, and I was able to cut my lupus medications back to just the basics – plaquenil, low dose maintenance steroids and folic acid. Although now the long-lasting near remission is ending, some new rituxan infusions may be in the works. However, liver enzymes have still been behaving nicely so far.

    Liver function test abnormal is found among people who take Plaquenil, especially for people who are female, 60+ old, have been taking the drug for 1 - 6 months, also take medication Enbrel, and have Osteoporosis Aug 25, 2011 · Plaquenil has never raised my liver enzymes and I have been on it for six years. The only time my ALT and AST were elevated when I was taking too much iron supplements for my anemia. Once I stopped those, the enzymes went back to normal. I have recently started taking plaquenil foe RA. My doctor called and said their was a slight change in my liver numbers. He said it is nothing to worry about. I was wondering does plaquenil affect your liver? If any of you experienced this please let me know. Thank-you, JK
